ASCII Converter

Convert text to ASCII codes in decimal, hex and binary, or turn codes back into text. Copy the result, with UTF-8 for symbols. Free, in your browser.

How it works

Each character is converted to bytes in UTF-8. For the basic characters of ASCII (codes 0 to 127) the byte is the ASCII code itself: A is 65, a is 97, 0 is 48 and the space is 32. Characters outside ASCII, such as é or emoji, take two to four bytes, each shown as its own number. The tool shows every byte in decimal, hexadecimal (two digits, capitals) and binary (eight digits). To decode, paste codes separated by spaces, commas or line breaks. Decimal codes run from 0 to 255 and hexadecimal codes may start with 0x. Only the line that matches your format makes sense. The others show ? or other characters.

Example: Hello is 72 101 108 108 111 in decimal, 48 65 6C 6C 6F in hexadecimal and 01001000 01100101 01101100 01101100 01101111 in binary.

Frequently asked questions

What is ASCII?

ASCII is an old character code with 128 entries, numbered 0 to 127: control codes, the digits, the English letters and basic punctuation. UTF-8, used on the web today, keeps the same numbers for those characters.

What is the ASCII code of a letter?

Capital A to Z are 65 to 90, and small a to z are 97 to 122. The digits 0 to 9 are 48 to 57. A small letter is the capital plus 32.

Why do I see codes above 127?

Characters outside ASCII, such as ł, ü or emoji, are stored as two to four bytes in UTF-8, and each of those bytes is a number from 128 to 255. The tool shows every byte separately.

How do I convert ASCII codes back to text?

Choose Codes to text and paste the codes separated by spaces or commas. Read the line that matches your format: decimal, hexadecimal or binary.

Is my text sent to a server?

Your text is converted in your browser and is not sent anywhere.
