Hex to Text Converter

Convert hex to text and ASCII, or text to hex. Paste hex bytes with or without spaces or 0x, and copy the result. Free, runs in your browser.

How it works

Text to hex: each character is converted to bytes in UTF-8 and every byte is written as two hexadecimal digits with capital letters, separated by spaces. Hex to text: the hex digits are read as bytes and decoded as UTF-8. Bytes can be separated by spaces, commas or line breaks, written together without separators (like 48656C6C6F) or start with 0x. Upper and lower case letters both work. A part that is not valid hex, such as ZZ, becomes a question mark. For the basic ASCII characters (codes 0 to 127) the byte is the ASCII code, so the same result reads as hex to ASCII.

Example: Hello World is 48 65 6C 6C 6F 20 57 6F 72 6C 64 in hex, and the same bytes decode back to Hello World.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert hex to text?

Choose Hex to text and paste the hex bytes. Each pair of digits is one byte, for example 48 is H and 69 is i. The result appears as you type.

Is hex to ASCII the same as hex to text?

For the basic characters it is. ASCII covers codes 0 to 127, and UTF-8, used for text today, gives the same bytes for those characters. Letters such as ł or emoji use two to four bytes, which this tool decodes as UTF-8.

Do I need spaces or the 0x prefix?

No. Bytes can be separated by spaces, commas or line breaks, written together like 48656C6C6F, or start with 0x. Both capital and small letters work.

Why do I see a question mark in the result?

A question mark replaces a part that is not valid hex, such as a letter after F, or a run of more than two digits with an odd count that cannot be split into bytes. Check the input for typing mistakes.

How do I convert text to hex?

Choose Text to hex and type or paste your text. Every byte of the UTF-8 text is shown as two hex digits, and you can copy the line with one click.

Is my text sent to a server?

The conversion runs in your browser and your text is not sent anywhere.
